How to Make Your Shopify Products Appear in ChatGPT Recommendations


Your Shopify store might be doing well on Google. But when a shopper asks ChatGPT “What’s the best leather crossbody bag under $150?” — your products are nowhere to be found.

This is the new reality of product discovery. ChatGPT now has over 800 million weekly active users. Adobe documented a 4,700% year-over-year growth in AI-generated traffic to U.S. retail sites. And here’s the kicker: visitors from AI search convert at 4.4x the rate of traditional organic search, according to Semrush data.

The question isn’t whether AI search matters for e-commerce. It’s whether your products are visible to it.

How ChatGPT Actually Finds Products

Before optimizing anything, you need to understand the plumbing. ChatGPT doesn’t crawl the web itself. It relies on three main sources:

  1. Bing’s index. ChatGPT Search uses Bing as its primary search backend. If Bing has rich, structured data about your products, ChatGPT can surface them.
  2. Shopify’s partnership with OpenAI. Shopify announced a direct integration that lets products appear — and be purchased — inside ChatGPT conversations. This uses your Shopify product catalog data.
  3. Structured data on your pages. When Bing crawls your product pages, it reads Schema.org JSON-LD markup to understand what the page is about: product name, price, availability, brand, GTIN, reviews, and more.

The takeaway: your product data needs to be machine-readable, structured, and rich. Marketing copy alone won’t cut it.

Step 1: Schema.org JSON-LD — The Foundation

Schema.org JSON-LD is the language that search engines (including AI ones) use to understand product pages. It’s a structured data format embedded in your page’s HTML that describes your product in a way machines can parse instantly.

A well-structured JSON-LD block for a product page includes:

  • Product name, URL, description, and image
  • Brand (as a nested Brand object)
  • Category, color, material (structured properties, not buried in marketing copy)
  • Offers with price, currency, availability, and SKU
  • AggregateRating (if you have reviews)
  • GTIN/EAN/UPC (critical — more on this below)
  • MerchantReturnPolicy and ShippingDetails (rich results eligibility)

Most Shopify themes include basic JSON-LD, but it’s usually minimal — just the product name, price, and an image. The AI-relevant fields (category, color, material, GTIN, return policy) are typically missing.

What to do: Add a comprehensive Schema.org Product JSON-LD block on every product page. If you’re not comfortable editing theme code, look for a Shopify app that injects this via a Theme App Extension (no code changes needed).

Step 2: GTIN/EAN/UPC — The Product Identifier AI Shopping Uses

This is the most underrated factor in AI product visibility. ChatGPT Shopping and Perplexity Shopping use GTINs (Global Trade Item Numbers) to identify and match products across retailers.

If your product has a barcode in Shopify (the “Barcode” field on your variant), it should appear in your JSON-LD as gtin13, gtin12, gtin14, or gtin depending on its length. If it’s a manufacturer part number instead, it should be mpn.

Without a GTIN, AI shopping platforms have to match your product by name and description alone — which is unreliable and often fails.

What to do: Make sure your Shopify products have barcodes filled in (Settings > Products in Shopify). Then verify that your JSON-LD includes the barcode in the correct GTIN format. You can test this with Google’s Rich Results Test tool.

Step 3: IndexNow — Tell Bing So ChatGPT Knows

Here’s the most proven mechanism for getting your products into ChatGPT: the IndexNow protocol.

IndexNow is a simple ping to Bing and Yandex that says “Hey, this URL was just updated. Come crawl it.” Instead of waiting days or weeks for Bing’s crawler to discover your changes, IndexNow triggers a re-crawl within minutes to hours.

The chain works like this: IndexNow → Bing re-crawls your page → Bing updates its index → ChatGPT Search uses Bing’s updated index → your product appears in ChatGPT responses.

What to do: After updating your product data or structured markup, send an IndexNow ping for each updated product URL. You can do this manually via the IndexNow API, or use a tool that does it automatically after each scan.

The llms.txt spec (from llmstxt.org) proposes a Markdown file at /llms.txt on your domain that AI crawlers can read as a structured product feed. The concept is sound.

The reality: As of February 2026, no major AI crawler — not GPTBot (ChatGPT), not ClaudeBot, not PerplexityBot, not Google-Extended — is documented to request or read /llms.txt. Google’s John Mueller has publicly confirmed this. CDN log audits across multiple sites show zero requests for this file from AI crawlers.

Should you still have one? Yes, but as a low-priority insurance policy. The spec may gain adoption in the future, and having a well-structured llms.txt file ready costs you nothing. Just don’t build your entire AEO strategy around it.
